To support our mission, we seek a Manager, Public Lands Communications to join our team.

The communications manager for the public lands program is responsible for crafting the overarching narrative of NWF's public lands work and ensuring that narrative is told and understood in the public. The position will serve as the program's lead communications staffer on public lands issues, and will work particularly closely with NWF's regional offices, affiliates, and other disciplines across the organization. Areas of focus will include policy threats to keeping public lands in public domain; curbing unbridled energy development on public lands and other important conservation values; protecting and enhancing important landscapes and migration corridors critical for wildlife; protecting and expanding protected special public lands areas, such as national monuments or wilderness areas; advocating for necessary funding for conservation program and agency capacities; protecting keystone environmental laws; and working with a diverse community of coalitions including environmental, sportsmen, business, unions, and others.

The manager will be located in NWF's Rocky Mountain Regional Center in Denver and will directly report to the Associate Vice President for Public Lands and will indirectly work with the Associate Vice President for Communications in DC.

In this role you will:

  • Craft an over-arching narrative for the conservation of public lands across the country and ensure the day-to-day work of the public lands program drives that narrative.
  • Serve as main liaison to and place stories in print, radio and television news outlets, and ensure excellent working relationship with reporters covering public lands.
  • Write and distribute press releases, press statements, blogs, and op-eds on a regular basis.
  • Provide comms expertise and help on broader coalition efforts that NWF are a part of.
  • Provide communications support and assistance to NWF's affiliates on an as-needed basis.
  • Assist NWF's communications office In DC on an as needed basis.
  • Create and maintain relationships with the outdoor communications community, including but not limited to, maintaining membership in outdoor communications trade groups and associations and attending annual conferences.


  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Seven to ten years as a journalist covering natural resources or working in strategic communications for a non-profit, government agency, or congressional office that deals with conservation or related topics
  • Excellent written and oral skills
  • A deep understanding of how to drive narrative in the public
  • Ability to separate the wheat from the chaff in rapid response environment of responding to breaking news
  • Ability to work well and effectively with others in pressured environment.  Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with constituents, staff, board members, donors, affiliates, and other supporters.
  • Must be able to think strategically, organize complex and multiple tasks and have demonstrated ability to set goals and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of people
  • Working understanding of conservation in the West
  • Working understanding of how and where people get informed of the day's news and how to reach them.

In this role there will be travel, approx. 6-8 times per year.
