The organization's programs focus on conserving wildlife, restoring habitat and waterways, expanding outdoor opportunities, connecting children with nature, and addressing the causes and consequences of climate change. To support our mission, we seek a Sr. Manager, Membership, to join our team in Reston, VA. 

The Sr. Manager, Membership is responsible for driving the National Wildlife Federation's membership programs to new levels of success in support of the Federation's bold new strategic plan to address America's wildlife crisis. The Sr. Manager will lead fundraising and engagement efforts in acquisitions, appeals, renewals and monthly giving programs, building on the success of a well-established enterprise, and working across teams to position the Federation's mass constituency programs for future growth.

The role is primarily focused on managing the strategy, concept, creative and production processes associated with direct mail marketing and telemarketing programs. The Sr. Manager provides campaign oversight from inception to implementation. S/he will deliver hands on management on audience and list selection, developing and ordering premiums, meeting budget requirements and orchestrating the creative and production processes.

The Sr. Manager will oversee the creative approval process, controlling the production phase to consistently deliver high quality, timely and cost effective campaigns that meet or exceed budgeted net revenue targets. This position will also direct telemarketing strategy and implementation to increase membership engagement and steward many of the program's more loyal and generous supporters.

The Sr. Manager, will supervise the Membership Marketing Coordinators. S/he will be the final set of eyes on all membership campaigns, ensuring that final approvals for set-ups, proofs and mail shop instructions are accurate and timely. The Sr. Manager will also act as the Membership liaison to the Premium Ordering Manager.

This is a leadership position critical in building a value oriented membership base of support. S/he will collaborate closely with the Director, Membership in developing a donor-centered, multichannel plans and strategies to effectively engage Americans in all the ways they relate to the natural world, whether as outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, climbers, cyclists, campers, hunters, anglers, birders, educators, farmers or conservation stewards.  

In this role you will:

  • Work closely with the Membership team its agency partners and production vendors to develop fiscally sound marketing and engagement strategies across channels to maximize lifetime value of NWF members.
  • Work with internal teams to conceptualize and develop direct marketing campaigns that support membership strategies. Lead, participate and/or attend all meetings critical to the development and enhancement of strategy including but not limited to: campaign analysis and campaign management performance reviews.
  • Manage relationships with key internal and external partners focused on a range of program deliverables, including: premium, production, consulting agencies, free-lance creative partners, and telemarketing vendors.
  • Manage and mentor Membership Marketing Coordinators, ensuring accurate and timely execution of all membership campaigns, a stronger understanding of member-driven organizational priorities and the further development of marketing skills.
  • Direct all activities associated with list planning and list rental, and manage NWF's relationships with list brokers and list managers.
  • In conjunction with the Director for Membership, contribute to design, build and management of the annual budget, monthly re-projections, and five-year forecasting for all programs.
  • Develop and manage a creative schedule for all membership campaigns; ensure that deadlines are adhered to and that final product meets expectations.
  • Work closely with production partner to ensure scheduling, logistical and cost issues are discussed and resolved efficiently and effectively.
  • Provide package specs and communicate messaging and creative ideas to designers and writers.
  • Manage backend premium usage and inventory tracking for all Membership programs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • College degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • 7+ years of progressively responsible professional experience in membership, fundraising or direct marketing, ideally for a complex national organization.
  • Strong project management skills, attention to detail, and the ability to consistently meet deadlines is required.
  • Must have experience working with a variety of vendors and managing out-sourced functions.
  • Passion for the preservation and protection of wildlife and wild places is highly desirable. Experience in environmental conservation a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and, when necessary, as an integral part of the team. Experience hosting effective meetings. Solid team building skills will serve this position well.
  • Professionalism, with superior interpersonal abilities, communications and political savvy, and excellent time management and organization skills.
  • Knowledge of industry trends.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with CRM and other fundraising software, various databases and management reporting tools.
